Every year we take several grandchildren on a two week vacation. We usually end up with five or six kids (we travel in separate cars and try to keep the kids mixed up according to age, etc.) Since traveling long distances can be rough on the little ones, let me show you how we make the trip less stressful and as enjoyable as it can be.
Just follow along and use these tips the next time you go somewhere with the kids.
Step 1: Weeks before the trip, get a headcount of all the kids coming along on your trip. Organize the list of kids by age groups (Newborn-1), (2-4), (5-7), (8-10), (11-13), etc. Go to the nearest Dollar Tree and buy a bag of goodies for each child including puzzles, and card games and little cars and trucks for the boys and tiny doll figures for the girls, etc. Coloring and doodle pads and crayons are fun stuff too. Spend about $12-15 on each child. Save these until you’re well into the trip and they are whining and wanting to get  there in a hurry. These little gifts can be handed out for winners of car games like ‘I spy’, etc. Be creative and use your imagination when handing out the gifts.
Step 2: Google fun car games for the age groups and print them out. Practice the games before you leave so you have an idea of the rules so that you can explain it in the car. After each game, let the kids choose a gift.
Step 3: Playing can get old for the kids, the parents and the grandparents. Start a story contest – start a story and have each kid (depending on the ages of the kids) tell a part of the story for 10 minutes, and on and on. If the story needs an ending, and all the kids have told their part then suggest one of them end it for a prize. A good 30 minute story told by the kids is worth keeping so bring along a hand-held recorder and secretly record it. Play it back after the story is finished.
Miles roll by and the kids are lost in the story telling. Keep the stories going until they are tired and possibly ready for a road trip nap!
Step 4: Start a travel photo Brag Book. Buy disposable cameras for each of the kids – tell them to take interesting pictures of the trip and your plans for the photo brag book. Label each camera with the child’s name on it for a later day. This will come in handy after the trip and will make for a lot of storytelling for the next trip. You can bring it along and have each one to tell what the picture was about and what they found interesting about that place. This will become the best brag book you and your family ever created. Tell them that each year new pictures taken by them will be added to the book. This will put them in the mood and help them to understand what traveling is really all about.
Step 5: Eating out all the time can be a big headache because kids like fast food. This trip you choose a different restaurant for dinner and bring along snippets you collected on the culture behind the food. Mexican food for instance – bring along pictures from places like Mexico, Spain, El Salvador etc. Ask a question about the food and have easy answers the kids can think about. The winner gets a prize and that evening eat Mexican food. The next night, try Chinese. Or Italian. Talk about what you are eating and why the people of that country eat it. A little research before hand can make eating out a memorable experience.
Step 6: Do a little research beforehand. If you pass a farm or cotton field, stop and ask permission for the kids to pick a peach, or tomato or something from the garden, or some cotton balls from the stalks. This is a good way to get a conversation going that the kids will enjoy. You never know how the conversation will end. If you see someone selling fruits and vegetables on the side of the road, stop and pick some up. These are some valuable learning experiences for kids of all ages, including yourself. And the trip just gets better and better.
There’s no perfect trip. Everybody gets tired after riding but at the end of the day it is all worth the time and effort you put forth. But keeping the kids occupied will certainly relieve the stress for everyone!
One of the things I love is traveling and taking vacations with my family as many times a year as I can. We do most of our traveling during the summer months because the grandchildren are all school-aged kids, ranging from first grade to 7th grade…
I never get tired of going to Arkansas, Florida, Utah, New Mexico or Colorado. Because of my love for these states, we try to go there every year and I am always on the lookout for new adventures for the kids and for myself. Having been going to the same places almost every year, we’re always on the lookout for new things the kids would be interested in. They are all different ages, and like different things. But I am not biased to these few states! We want to travel all across the country and that’s in the works!
I know there are other places to go and eventually we will get there. Each year at some time or another we try to get to a new place just to keep the travel interest alive and to be able to show off our findings on my blogsite here.
Sometimes between journeys I rely on posts from other travel writers who don’t mind sharing with our readers and that’s a big help and keeps our readers up-to-date on things going on.
The purpose of The Family Traveler blog works for both our readers and the customers we serve: our advertisers. We want to allow our readers to visit the cabins, the motels and restaurants that we stay at and enjoy every minute of it as we have. We want them to raft with us or visit the museums or take a train ride with us up and down the mountains of Colorado. We try to include as much as we can, as long as we have advertisers who are willing to work with us.
We are not in this for the short run. The Family Traveler has been around a long time and will stay around as long as I have breath.
I’ve got plans for some great adventures coming up in November and December. We hope you’ll join in and let’s go traveling together. But in the meantime let’s get ready for a little road trip!
Fall is just around the corner, and with it comes beautiful autumn colors; orange and yellow leaves everywhere… you know the ones…
I want to go where the leaves are turning and the forests are alive and bursting in their finest fall decor. I want to smell the freshness of cool autumn and pine needles and feel the lush damp bed of fallen leaves on the forest floor. Can you feel the damp, musty leaves underneath your feet? I almost can but it’s not like being there.
The grand kids will be out of school in a few weeks for Fall break – October 9th thru 13th to be exact; I think we’ll head off to Arkansas and follow the trail of falling leaves for that week.

My name is Erica Jacobs, I am from Portland, Oregon. My Husband and I are taking our kids on a cross RV trip next week, and we are really looking forward to seeing some of the amazing places in our country! We’ve been doing a lot of research for road trips as well as destinations, and I thought your page, https://familytravelhostusa.com/travel-guide-links/ was really enjoyable and helpful. The final countdown is on and we are all very excited!
I think this is going to be a great experience for our family, and as fun as the planning as been, we can’t wait to hit the road. Yesterday my kids were helping me look online for possible locations to visit along our route, and my daughter Nicole found this guide, https://www.titlemax.com/resources/unforgettable-road-trips-in-america/ which had some great areas and sites that we might want to visit, and I thought it would be a great article to add to your page, for others who are doing research on planning a trip like we are. I’d love if you were able to add it, I think it’d be so neat to show Nicole that she was able to contribute something cool and helpful to your page!
I hope you enjoy the article and find it useful, and thanks so much for the ideas and information on your page! Personally, I’ve never done a vacation like this before – in the past we’ve just gone some place warm and sunny 🙂 But I think this will be a great experience for our family and my kids will get a lot out of it. I couldn’t think of a better way to end a great summer! Thanks again, and if you are able to add the article Nicole found please let me know! Have a great day and I hope to speak to you soon.
Riders of the Storm – Hurricane Harvey: These photos just came in from Michelle St Marie, Channelview, Texas. She said, “My ditch is already flowing into my yard.” Thanks Michelle. You Guys be safe…
Start sending those Hurricane Harvey photos so we can share them with our readers. Email photos to marcies1960@aol.com or marcies1960@gmail.com.
I’ve been keeping a close eye on the weather channel since Hurricane Harvey is threatening the Gulf Coast. I have family in Houston and Channel View, Galveston, Friendswood – all through that area that have chose to ride out the storm. A little intense but I suppose they know what they want to do! Me, I’d take this opportunity for a road rip farther inland! The tornado and flooding risks are enough for me, let alone the impact of Hurricane Harvey.
All of you that chose to ride out the storm, stay safe. Keep plenty of water and crackers and canned meats on hand; flashlights and batteries and charge up your laptops and phones… Keep in touch with the outside world.
If you do ride out the storm, send us your photos and videos… marcies1960@gmail.com

People think I am crazy for taking off on a three week family adventure in two separate vehicles with four adults and six kids ranging from six years to twelve years old; a cargo full of camping supplies packed to the brim and the family pets along for the ride…heading for the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. That’s my idea of a wonderful fun-filled good old fashioned family vacation, grandma style! It has honestly become a family tradition for us and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Camping has its’ ups and downs and yes, it’s hard camping out and roughing it sometimes. Whether we camp out in a state park or along side a river somewhere, as long as there is water somewhere close by, we usually have a good time. Or if we stay in a extravagant motel or an inexpensive find along the way, we try and make the best of it. So long as there is no bedbugs, it’s clean and there is a pool!
Our kids are average to good swimmers but sometimes, swimming in the Rocky Mountains is hard because the temperature of the water is usually around 40 degrees. Not good swimming conditions, that’s for sure.
Being almost old (this grandma is on the backside of sixty!), I figure we better do it now while I am still willing and able. On normal camping trips in Colorado every year, our gang all pitch in and do their parts. The guys put up the tents and get the wood for camp fires and keep plenty in stock while we women watch the kids and do the cooking and making sure everyone ha a warm bed at night. And don’t forget making sure we have s’mores in the evenings.
Nighttime in the mountains can get a little cold (around fifty degrees) and it don’t start warming up the next day until around ten or eleven when the sun comes out. If it rains it don’t warm up too much. After years of doing this, we have learned to pack for colder weather. Better to be prepared than be cold!
One of our favorite things to do is go rafting. There are several outfitters that allow children under six to raft but not all. If you’re looking for a rafting adventure be sure to call ahead and find out age requirements, etc. ahead of time. It also depends on where you will be rafting too. The Arkansas river in Colorado extends for miles so you will probably be able to find something for your group.
Families rafting in the Rockies
Another thing I have learned is that kids don’t always do well staying at cabins especially since there is no pool. Cabins are fine if there is water flowing close by where they can fish or play in the water. Trust me – years of staying in cabins with our kids have taught me to call ahead and make sure there is water or a creek or something where the kids can soak their feet. Not all kids like water, I agree, but from experience, find out what amenities are available before you try to stay at cabins!
Camping is fun, but it is hard work. You always have plenty to do but keeping the little ones motivated and occupied is somewhat of a chore sometimes, especially in most cases there is no cell service or WiFi.
We are on a budget so before we leave, I find out all the information I can about the place and take advantage of any and all free stuff available for us. Then we do things according to price, time, and destination, and ages.
If you do decide to go camping, it’s important to find out ahead of time the average daily and nightly weather conditions, and find as many safe camp sites that are available to you before you get there so you’re able to choose whichever one that better suits your family’s needs. I like to make sure there are bathrooms for daytime use if we are doing primitive camping. Park rangers don’t like people pooping all over the woods and leaving toilet paper everywhere. Littering the forest is not taken lightly.
Call me a crazy grandma… but spending quality time with those I love is worth the time and effort and hard work. We don’t always camp out – we do stay at motels quite a bit. But if you go as far as Colorado (it’s over 1000 miles one way from us) with this many people, camping out is an adventure because there s something for the whole family to enjoy. When we sit around the campfire at night, and roasting marshmallows or weiners, we’re making memories and to me, that means a lot. We start out with telling stories and I encourage each child to tell his or her own story. And I pull a few out of my hat as well!
Before you know it we all turn in for the night and wake up to a cool crisp morning hoping that the next person on the trip will get up, start a fire and put the coffee on!
Stay tuned for my next blog post. In my bag I found a few suitable rafting outfitters and among other great finds that just might help you plan your next vacation adventure.
“Not Colorado again,” whined my twelve year old grandson Nicolas. “Let’s go to Florida this year.”
“But I thought you guys loved Colorado.”
“We do but we go to the same place every year,” he said.
So after that I realized it was time to do something different – and we are. I managed to get a really good deal on a couple of rooms at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort in Clearwater Beach, Florida this year for 5 nights so in addition to our 4 week vacation in Colorado we are going to Florida! It’s over a thousand miles east from home, and when we get back from there, we rest for a few days before heading toward Carlsbad, NM on our way to Arizona, then from there to Utah and then back to Colorado before returning home..
We’ve never been to Arizona (El Rancho Robles) before and the kids have never been to Carlsbad nor have any of been to Monument Valley, Utah (Gouldings Lodge). Here are several places on our 4 week trek out west that we haven’t been and I am excited, my bags are packed and this mamaw is ready to go. We are going rafting this year, not once but three times (Noah’s Ark Colorado Rafting, Acquired Tastes Rafting, Arkansas River Tours) throughout our 4 week trip so I know the kids will have a blast!
Since there will be more people traveling with us this year, I will definitely have to downsize and not take quite as many clothes (some of which I never wear anyway) to make rooms for other people’s clothes and stuff.
In the next few weeks I will be updating our blogs on our day to day adventures as well as posting numerous pictures daily. Stay tuned and come travel with us!
School is almost out, at least for our area. May 19th is our last day. Having said that, we’ll be on the road again this summer. In June we’ll be heading to Florida! As soon as we get home at the end of the month, we’re heading back west – we’re heading to New Mexico the Utah and finish up in Colorado.
Our First Day Out in Colorado and Then in New Mexico
By Tristin Sean Owens, 3rd Grader
Logansport Elementary School
We were going to Colorado and it took two days but we got their and had to go to New Mexico but going to New Mexico we got in a blizzard and it got bad so we could not go back so we had to keep on going and when we got out of the blizzard we got to New Mexico and got in the hot tub their was some men that was drinking and was very crazy so we got out of the hot tub and got in the pool and then it got late so we went in the motel and went to sleep.Â
Mamaw said we are going to Albuquerque today and we might go to Hinkle Family Fun Center. Ms. Betty, mamaw’s friend, will love playing at Hinkle’s with us! I hope she does! Then we are going to visit several old churches in Santa Fe tomorrow. I’d rather stay here at the room and swim. It was snowing yesterday when we were at the pool but the pool was warm. It is not an inside pool.
We left home last Saturday for an 8-day venture out West. The five of us made it to Wichita Falls last Saturday where we shut down for the night. We stayed at the Howard Johnson right off the Interstate – the beds were okay but there was only a half of roll of toilet paper in our room and there was no shower curtain on the shower stall. Complaining: sigh! Good thing none of us had a virus!
My friend Ms. Betty from Logansport is with us. I know without a doubt she will never want to come again for a number of reasons, mainly because of the long drive to our destination! She said yesterday that she does not like Colorado at all.
As we traveled through New Mexico over into Colorado, freshly fallen snow was everywhere.
We arrived in Alamosa, Colorado around six p.m. on Sunday and found an I-Hop where we had our evening meal before heading over to South Fork where we planned to stay for the night. We rented a nice room at the Allington Inn and Suites – the rooms were nice and clean and the best part: the pool and hot tub was inside and open for business. Our two younger travelers were excited and stayed in the pool until shortly after ten.
By now the temperature has dropped dramatically outside and it is freezing.
More to come – stay tuned!
We arrived in Santa Fe, NM on Monday. It started snowing while we were coming in. We are staying at the Inn at Santa Fe. It is a nice motel and has a full breakfast for the guests. The rooms are clean and comfy! I love it here and I’m in no hurry to leave! This week we are going downtown to visit some of the museums and old churches , and then drive over to Albuquerque on the train for a full day of shopping and visiting museums.
The boys started getting a little fussy being cooped up all day yesterday because snow was falling off and on all day. It was cold outside but in spite of that, their papaw took them down to the pool last evening for a swim in the hot tub! Well, the motel staff heated up the pool and hot tub and the boys swim, and played in spite of the wintry weather all day! There was snow on the ground in places! The pool was warm and the hot tub was even ‘hotter’! Three state troopers who were transporting a prisoner to another town was in the hot tub last night and they apparently having some drinks! I told Theresa at home about it and she told me to tell them not to “drink and drive!”
Ms. Betty seems to like Santa Fe, NM a lot better. She and I have been visiting some of the gift shops and thrift stores around town!
This Sunday, we are headed out to Santa Fe, NM to see the country, do some travel writing and just enjoy the week away from home. I am taking my grandson Kendray, my friend Ms. Betty and my other half and best friend, Jackie.
Â
Kendray is 5 and attends Logansport Elementary – he is in kindergarten. I had to get it approved at the school board office for him to go without the days absent being counted against him, so now that is done and approved, we are just about ready to go.
Â
Shortly after church on Sunday, I am picking up Ms Betty and the four of us are rolling out of here for a few days.
Â
It feels odd that I am only taking one child this time instead of the normal three but truthfully I have to write this time and take pictures for my websites and there won’t be a whole lot of time to play with the boys. Kendray will have to hang with his pa quite a bit while I work!
Â
I already see the week unfolding and it is going to be a wonderful trip. I checked the 7-day weather outlook for Santa Fe and it is rather cool there – middle 60’s in the daytime and 40-50’s at night! According to what I read, about the middle of the week it might get up in the 70’s a couple of days!
Â
So we ‘re heading out on Sunday – check back for daily posts of our New Mexico experience.
Â
When we return from our New Mexico adventure, we are heading to Mt. Ida, Arkansas. In a couple of weeks Spring Break is coming up (we’re leaving right after church on Sunday and coming home the following Friday). That week the whole family will be in tow and we are going to have an awesome spring break with the kids. We’re staying at Mountain Harbor Resort in one of the large condo/cottages! It is such a beautiful place – you can actually sit on the back porch and enjoy your time away from home and listen to the birds while they’re busily going on with their day. And in the evenings an occasional raccoon will stop by ad come up on the porch for morsels of food the kids leave behind. The kids love Mountain Harbor as much as I do. Â

This summer, we drove up to Lake City, Colorado where we spent five days at the TEXAN RESORT. We had a two-story three bedroom cabin large enough we could all spread out and stretch without bumping into each other at every turn. With all the comforts of home at our fingertips, we rested and enjoyed ourselves.
While we were in Lake City, we had a picnic downtown at the park while the little ones played with the other kids.
In the evenings, back at the cabin we grilled hamburgers while the kids played horseshoes with some of the other guests at the resort. The kids were fortunate enough to meet up with some children who lived there year round who showed our clan some fun and adventure while we were there.
The mornings were rather cool but sitting on the front porch wrapped in a cozy blanket and sipping hot coffee while the family slept soothed my nerves. At the end of our journey, it was me who cried because we had to leave. Staying at The Texan Resort was an experience of a lifetime. This was one time I wanted to stay the entire summer. The Texan Resort has cabins to fit every group size and budget. They wash their linen and towels everyday and hang them out in the sun to dry. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my mother did the laundry. Fresh air-dried towels and linen are the best.
While we were in Lake City, we eased up the mountain to the Hard Tack Mine Tours & Museum. The tour into the mine shaft was cool and educational, but the gift shop caught their eye immediately. Fortunately for them, I had rolls of quarters on hand for them to spend at the gift shop! If you go up to the mine, wear shoes and take a light jacket. It is cold inside the tunnel.
Later in the week on Friday, we went to the Mountaineer Theatre downtown and saw Finding Dora. The theater is a one-of-a-kind gem nestled out at the corner of town, and the family running it are down-home good people.
Lake City is a relaxed, laid back little town. There are a few horseback outfitters in the area and backpacking, and rafting if you’re into that kind of thing.
For me, just relaxing and enjoying my week at the cabin is all I needed. We will be at the Texan Resort for many years to come.
When it comes to eating out, I’m always ready. But living in a small town like Logansport, Louisiana doesn’t always give you the liberty of having several restaurants to choose from. – Click Here To Read Full Story

Hurricane Matthew is bearing down on the Florida coastline and is expected to reacg as far as the Carolinas. Mandatory evacuations are in effect in four states as we speak. Please submit photos of the coastline if you any and/or photos of the evacuation i progress if you’re traveling along the interstate. Submit photos, a brief story or caption and your name and where you’re from so we can post it on our travel sites representing Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina.
We have several travel websites that cater to families who love to travel and we advertise for motels, hotels, restaurants, fun centers and museums, etc. The reason for this is simple: family travelers are always looking for family tested and approved destinations and we provide an outlet for them. Our advertisers who cater to these families need us to provide a foundation (website advertising) so these families have easy access to their information.
Our goal is to provide service to both entities and be the medium between the two – if you have questions about any of the advertisers on any of our sites, we are here to help.
We are familiar with the advertisers on each site and can provide information and assistance if you email us at marcies1960@gmail.com.
We want families to be satisfied when they arrive at a destination especially when we recommend it. Vice versa. We don’t book trips but we do assist in finding family-tested destinations that is affordable, kid-friendly and mother approved.
In an effort to provide more service to both entities, we are sending out an urgent call for travel stories in the United States – destination: anywhere. Send up to 10 travel photos with your stories and provide addresses, phone numbers, email address and websites when you’re writing about a certain motel, restaurant or museum, etc. Our readers enjoy reading but hey want easy access to information. Submissions must be between 1500-3500 words.
We do not pay for travel stories or photos and we do not assign anyone to write for us. We leave that up to you – we do offer a credible byline and links for your website. Email me with your story ideas or query: marcies1960@gmail.com

If you have never been to Mountain Harbour Resort in Mt. Ida Arkansas (32 miles from Hot Springs) then you’re in for a treat if you do decide to go. Tell them that Marcella at Family Travel Host USA sent ya!
When we arrived at the Mountain Harbour Resort in Mt. Ida, we were greeted with the best service imaginable. I knew we’d be in for a wonderful mini vacation with the grand kids at the resort but a part of me dreaded the prospect of spending the next five days looking for something to do with the kids that was not only close but affordable.
When we arrived at our cabin, I knew my worries were short lived. Our cabin had three bedrooms with double full-size beds in two of the bedrooms and a king-size bed in the master bedroom. We were afforded the luxury of having three full size bathrooms, a dishwasher and washer and dryer. The roominess and space made our vacation easier and it was smooth sailing four all of us. What more could a person as for?

Upon arrival we unpacked the car, had a picnic lunch and then we drove to the pool area where the kids spent the next several hours swimming and playing. Their energy was finally depleted by evening and we settled down for the night.
The next day we swam, we road around and toured the area; the kids went hiking with their uncle Marvin. Kendray, the youngest brought back a tortoise, and then it was released back where they found it. A lot of deer that just wander around in the daylight – some of them are really big! Nicolas caught a desert iguana and released it as well.
Before the week was out, Marvin had rigged up fishing poles for all the kids and they all ventured off and found the perfect fishing spot next to a bridge. The kids were bringing in the tiny perch quickly and releasing them back in the water. They spent hours fishing and the little ones cried when Marvin brought them back to the cabin. The boys found a new hobby and learned that you don’t always have to have a rod and reel to have fun fishing.
Mid week, we went into Hot Springs (about thirty miles from our location) to do a few things. The kids enjoyed going up the Mountain Tower and going to the Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo before coming back here.
One evening I ventured into town to get a few supplies and brought back a watermelon for the next day (a little surprise for our upcoming back porch picnic!). I left it in the car. There were several small bags of paper and trash left on the floor as well – no harm done – my plans were to clean the car out the next day. On our way here, my electric window on the driver side shut down and it stuck about two inches from the top. Since it wasn’t going to rain all week, I knew everything would be okay.
That night, while we slept, a coon(s) ventured in the window and scattered the trash everywhere – such an ugly mess! One of the younger kids spotted the watermelon in the back and Marvin told them the coons left it. We let the joke ride and they were all thanking the coons for their gift when we cut the melon! We made a special memory that night and the little ones will tell their tale of the coons and the watermelon for a long time to come!
My choice to come to Mountain Harbour Resort was the right choice – our stay was pleasurable and worth every cent spent. the downfall is getting ready to leave today. That is the last thing we want to do. We may leave and go home and return to our normal lives but being here the last five days will be in the hearts and mind of these children and me for the rest of our lives. Thank you Mountain Harbour Resort for taking the stress out of vacationing!
