CARSON CITY, Nevada (Spring 2019) — Nevada welcomes stargazers, thespians, kayakers, exotic car enthusiasts and pool partygoers with a summer of events and Nevada adventure. With star parties in Ely, drag races in Fallon, and world-class performances throughout Reno-Tahoe, summer in Nevada combines desert heat with a splash of entertainment. Here’s how to get outside and explore the state this season.

We need your advice!

Dear Readers!

Next summer, my family and I are doing something totally different than anything we have ever done before! We are staying for a week in Salida, Colorado at a hostel. We will be staying at the Simple Lodge & Hostel.

Our hostel Melanie will be answering some of our questions but I’d like your feedback as well. Has anyone reading this ever stayed at a hostel before? If so, what is it like? What is the difference between a hostel and a hotel/motel? Please explain to me and to others who have never stayed in one either.

Are hostels safe?

This is going to be a new experience for me and my family so any additional information or ideas you’d like to share – please do…

Feel free to reply below or submit your reply to us at marcies1960@aol.com. We will share replies with our readers…

Next Trip Coming Up

California is the place to be I’ve been told so watch out, here we come!

California Family Travel Host

For years I have concentrated on traveling West but thus far, as far as I ever got was  Colorado, New Mexico and Southern Utah. I have dragged my kids and grand kids all over Colorado and New Mexico over the years yet there are still a few places we haven’t visited yet. But we will get there eventually.

This next year, July 2020 to be exact, I decided we are going someplace different and do something totally unexpected as far as I am concerned. My children always wanted to go to California when they were little but we could never afford it (or could we?). So we never went. They all grew up and had kids of their own!

Back in the middle of the 2000’s – around 2007 there were several grand kids then ranging from 4 to 14. They always wanted to go to California as well but…

Great Outdoors Month in Arkansas

Great Outdoors Month in Arkansas
By Zoie Clift
Travel Writer

June is Great Outdoors Month, and with a name like The Natural State, it’s no surprise that Arkansas is an outdoor haven and perfect place to celebrate. The state’s terrain is showcased via mountain ranges, waterfalls, natural bridges, lakes, rivers and different varieties of flowers and plants.

You can take a deep breath of fresh Ozark or Ouachita mountain air or revel in the breeze crossing one of Arkansas’s great lakes and rivers. The outdoors are a playground and perfect backdrop for your next fishing, boating, camping, hiking and biking adventure. There are also exciting opportunities for birding and wildlife watching, which are found within easy reach of every Arkansas community, including the state’s largest cities.

Starting out the month is National Trails Day, which takes place the first Saturday in June. On this day hikers, bikers, paddlers, horseback riders, trail clubs and more come together to clean up and maintain trails.

Hiking in Arkansas is a great way to experience the beauty of The Natural State. Arkansas is home to several long-distance trails and dozens of shorter hikes that are enjoyable in any season.

The state’s diverse topography offers a range of scenic territory to explore. The variety of landscapes includes mountains, pine and bottomland hardwood forests, and rivers and streams. Arkansas is also home to 52 state parks, three national forests and a wealth of terrain to choose from for your Arkansas adventure, whether you prefer mountain biking, cycling, floating, kayaking or hiking. (Please remember that staying hydrated is crucial in the summer in Arkansas as well as having access to escape the heat if need be.)

With pristine lakes, rivers, and fishing holes across the state, Arkansas is a haven for fishing too. During the “Free Fishing Days” event, which begins at noon on June 7 and goes until midnight June 9, you can fish anywhere in Arkansas without fishing licenses or trout permits, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Pack your swimsuit and come splash the summer away on an Arkansas beach or swimming hole. The state is home to more than 600,000 acres of lakes and 9,700 miles of streams with many campgrounds and RV parks located on or near the water for fun water activities like fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming and more. The Great American Campout takes place June 22, which spotlights the enjoyment camping with your family and friends can bring.

Great Outdoors Month was established in 1998 to celebrate nature and the outdoors. The national annual event is designated through governor proclamations and highlights the many benefits from the great outdoors. For more details on Great Outdoors Month and the events taking place during this time, visit greatoutdoorsmonth.org. For more information on outdoor offerings in Arkansas, visit arkansas.com/things-to-do/outdoors.

About Arkansas Tourism
Arkansas Tourism, a division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, strives to expand the economic impact of travel and tourism in the state and enhance the quality of life for all Arkansans. The division manages 14 Arkansas Welcome Centers and employs more than 60 staff members across The Natural State. For more information, visit http://www.arkansas.com.

New Mexico and Colorado, Here We Come

New Mexico and Colorado, Here We Come
By Marcella Simmons – Meeks

I love traveling with my grandkids as much as I use to love traveling with my own children – if not more! Over the years I have traveled with different grand kids – most of them have all grown up now except there are still three that are over seven and under fifteen that still love to travel with me.

We just returned from Galveston, Texas – we took a little mini four day spring break trip – we went out to Seawolf Park while we were there and had a picnic – the kids checked out the ship and submarine – they enjoyed it more than I thought they would. Having grown up in Galveston back in the seventies, the Seawolf Park was a regular fun place for us kids back then. We could actually get out and enjoy and being with family and having picnics. My sisters and I loved the beach in Galveston and everything there was to do back then in Galveston. The Galveston ferry was also an all-time favorite. We’d park and ride back and forth a couple times a day! It was and still is free. Climbing to the top of the boat was fun!

In June, we are heading to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the first five nights. We are going to Hinkle Family Fun Center a couple of times before we leave. This is our favorite fun spot in the city. Phone: 505.299.3100, 12931 Indian School Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112. Hinkle’s is Albuquerque’s Premier Family Entertainment Destination. Hinkle Family Fun Center features all new Immersive Virtual Reality, an 1/8 mile twisting Go Kart Track, a 4500 square foot black light themed Lazer Tag arena two scenic 18 hole Miniature Golf Courses, the Fun Center & Lazer Tag Game Rooms and Prize Centers, Bumper Boats, a 13,000 square foot outdoor Paintball field, Bumper Cars, Battletech, Rock Climbing, Bungee Jump Trampoline, Lazer Frenzy, Light Space, Birthday Parties, Group Events, and Cody’s Cafe Too! Rain or shine or anytime! Come join us!

Another fun place that we frequent every year is the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science located at http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/ 1801 Mountain Rd NW, near Old Town in Albuquerque. Phone: (505) 841-2800. Visitors explore the origins and geological history of the American Southwest through vivid displays including dinosaur models, ice-age cave replicas, a naturalist center and a walk-through volcano.

The kids love Cliff’s Amusement Park located at 4800 Osuna Rd NE, in Albuquerque.
Phone: 505-881-9373. Cliff’s is the only amusement park and outdoor waterpark in the city. They offer unlimited rides and all day passes for customers of all ages – our kids love it and is reasonably priced. Day passes are usually under $30 bucks each. They have an online special where you can get discounts by getting tickets online.

One of my favorite places to go is Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque. It stretches 17 miles along Albuquerque West Mesa, a volcanic basalt escarpment that dominates the city’s western horizon. It is managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque. Address: Western Trail NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120
Phone: (505) 899-0205.

We’re not done yet in Albuquerque! We’ll squeeze in another couple of places before we leave!

We always visit the ABQ BioPark Zoo (Zoo, Aquarium and Botanical Gardens) located next to the Rio Grande. The 64-acre Zoo has been offering guests close encounters with exotic and native animals since 1927. It’s located at 903 10th St. SW, 87102. Be sure to ride the train and visit the Aquarium and the Botanical Gardens while you’re at the zoo. You may wish to make this a two or three day adventure – depending on how much time you have to spend. You can buy combo tickets on their website way cheaper than you can get them at the gate.

Another of our adventures is to take a day and walk around Albuquerque Old Town. Old Town’s narrow streets and century-old adobe houses are home to New Mexican eateries serving enchiladas and sopaipilla pastries, and tiny artisan shops selling jewelry, rugs and pottery. Visit the 18th-century San Felipe de Neri Church.

While you’re in the Old Town section, be sure to stop by The American International Rattlesnake Museum located at 202 San Felipe St NW. The museum is devoted to snakes, particularly rattlesnakes, and is dedicated to rattlesnake education. For more details about the museum, visit their website at http://www.rattlesnakes.com/.

There’s no time left to do anything else in Albuquerque so now it’s time to head over to Colorado!

Leaving Albuquerque, we’ll drive for six hours over to Naturita, Colorado – we’ve never been before so this will be an experience in a lifetime. We’ll be staying at High Country RV Park located at 218 W Main Street in Naturita, Colorado. (970) 865-2101. Lloyd – can’t wait to see you guys! We’ll be in Naturita for five nights and are going to comb the area for every gem – every adventure available to us and we’ll post it on our website! Stay tuned for updates! Visit High Country RV Park at
https://www.facebook.com/HighCountryRVPark/. Tell Lloyd Marcy at Family Traveler Host USA sent ya!

When we leave there, we’re driving the 186 miles to Lake City, Colorado to one of our favorite resorts – this will be our 6th year staying at A TEXAN RESORT. Arlen, we’re coming home for a few nights in June! Lake City is so beautiful this time of year, and having a cabin is a blessing. You guys are certainly the best and we wouldn’t stay anywhere else! You can reserve a cabin by calling 970-944-2246 or visit their website at www.texanresort.com/. There are cabin to fit all of your needs.

While we’re there the kids will be out and about at the park in town! We’re gonna have a picnic and then in the evening, go to the Mountaineer Theatre. This is one of our favorites in Lake City!

When we finally leave Lake City, we’re driving over to South Fork for a couple of days. We’re staying at the Wolf Creek Ski Lodge, we’re driving the 68 miles to the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve where we’ll spend the coolest part of our morning.

While we’re in the area, we’ll drive to the nearby Colorado Gators Reptile Park & Alligator and Reptile Rescue, Fish Farm. The kids love coming here and this will be a good place too cool down after the morning in the sun at the Sand Dunes.

We’re only staying in South Fork for three days – so there’s not a lot of time to visit the adventures – we need a day or two to rest up. When we leave South Fork, we’ll be heading to Canon City, Colorado and going out to the famous Royal Gorge Bridge while we’re there. Check out their site for additional details.

We’ll also drive over to Leadville, Colorado before leaving Canon City in a few days and ride the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad. The LC&S takes passengers along the old Denver, South Park & Pacific and Colorado & Southern lines to the Continental Divide.

The end of our journey will be Manitou Springs where we’ll visit the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Just west of Colorado Springs, The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are a group of relocated Anasazi ruins cliff dwellings and museums are an all-time favorite – we’ve been visiting the Anasazi ruins every year for several years and still love it as much as we did on day one.

The next day we’ll drive to Woodland Park a few miles from the cliff dwellings to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. RMDRC is located in Woodland Park at 201 S Fairview St. This is a fossil museum primarily exhibiting fossil organisms of North America’s Late Cretaceous including dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, and fish. This is also a favorite and we love coming here every year.

We’re starting home in a couple of days – we’re going to miss New Mexico and Colorado – but we’ll be back. Twenty-two days on vacation is just not enough time to do all the things we want but there is always next year! See you then!

I will be posting about our trip on a daily basis starting in June so watch for it!

Visiting Texas on Your Next Road Trip

Visiting Texas on Your Next Road Trip
By Ann Emerson

Texas is big and brawny in every way, a state brimming with natural assets. Whether visiting rugged mountains, sandy beaches, wild canyons or pine tree forests, the “Lone Star State” pleases travelers in a million wonderful ways.
In the northwest panhandle plains, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in Canyon, Texas. Comanche and Apache people, Spanish explorers, modern day Texans, and tourists alike have all relished in the bounty of this high plains preserve. Palo Duro Canyon was gradually carved over the course of a million years by the relentless Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The result is a canyon that presently measures 120 miles in length, 20 miles in width, and reaches a depth of approximately 800 feet, earning it the popular title “Grand Canyon of Texas.” The canyon’s subtle colors – the red, white, yellow, gray, and lavender- arise from the claystone, sandstone, gypsum and mudstone layered within its walls. Area plant life adds variety to the landscape too, with mesquite, cottonwood, and juniper trees, and Indian blanket and star thistle enlivening the scene. Animals such as the Palo Duro mouse, barbary sheep, roadrunner and longhorn steer may be viewed from the park’s auto routes or scores of hiking, biking and horse trails. Newcomers should stop by the visitor center on the canyon rim, a native stone structure designed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. For guests who’d like to hear the compelling tale of the “Lone Star State’s” pioneer heritage, the popular “Texas Musical Drama” is performed seasonally at Palo Duro’s outdoor amphitheater.
Big Bend National Park, accessible from Marathon, Alpine, or Marfa/Presidio, is at the mountainous southwest tip of the “Lone Star State.” Aptly named “Big,” this national treasure is certainly vast and wild; it does take several days to truly explore these parklands and the far-flung towns within this region. Travelers should keep an eye (or two) on their gas gauges and fill up their tanks whenever the opportunity arises. Big Bend’s terrain is a contrasting combination of Chisos Mountain woodlands, canyons cut by the mighty Rio Grande, and an enormous expanse of the Chihuahuan Desert. An appealing mix of plants represents both American and Mexican varieties, and the park’s desert-dwelling animals come in all shapes and sizes. There are garden-variety types like skunks and jackrabbits and more ominous residents such as black bears, coyotes and mountain lions. The bird population is considerable, encompassing more than 450 species, offering the greatest collection of winged friends in the entire national park system. Fortunately for visitors, hundreds of miles of roadways and nature trails provide tried-and-true routes for exploring all of Big Bend’s interesting nooks and crannies.
On southeast Texas’ Gulf Coast, Padre Island National Seashore is located in the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of Corpus Christi. This seashore protects the world’s longest remaining undeveloped barrier island and attracts 800,000 visitors each year. For those who like waterworks, count such favorite pastimes here as saltwater fishing, windsurfing and beachcombing for seashells and driftwood. Many visitors seem to enjoy participating in the park’s special hatchling turtle release programs. At these sessions, baby sea turtles whose eggs were incubated at a park facility are carefully set free into Gulf waters. Landlubbers on Padre Island can go bird watching, hiking, biking or horseback riding. All the while, Padre’s rangers present interpretive deck talks and beach or birding walks designed both to entertain and educate guests.

In nearby Brownsville, Texas’ southernmost city, has been billed as “On the Border by the Sea,” offering the best of both worlds for the long- or short-term visitor. Cross the Rio Grande from Brownsville and spend a day in Matamoros, Mexico. Or, visit the Sabal Palm Grove Wildlife Sanctuary, nested on 172 acres. Owned by the Audubon Society, it’s one of the best-preserved Sabal Palm forests in the United States.
A short jaunt to the northeast brings you to Natural Bridge Caverns (located just north of San Antonio). This cavern is one of the world’s premier show caves. One way of entering the South Cavern is to be lowered down a 160-foot shaft on a winch. For those not quite so adventurous, there’s a walk-in tunnel to the bottom of the shaft entrance. Once there, you’ll be awed by stalactites in excess of 6 feet in length, and one that is 14 feet long – among the longest in North America. Above ground, guests enjoy the cave’s namesake, the 60-foot Natural Bridge that spans the sinkhole of the cavern.
Sam Houston National Forest is located 50 miles north of Houston in east Texas’ piney woods. Hiking, fishing, boating, and hunting are the plum activities at this national forest. The 128-mile Lone Star Trail, a designated National Recreation Trail, meanders through Sam Houston, passing a nice variety of woodlands, creeks, lakes and streams along the way. For visitors who’d rather ride than walk, horses and off-road vehicles are permitted in designated areas. The forest’s freshwater lakes provide swimming areas, sailing opportunities, launches for private watercraft, and canoe or paddleboat rentals. Black bass, catfish and bream are common catches for Sam Houston anglers and hunters bag deer, squirrels, ducks and quail. You should also catch glimpses of endangered woodpeckers and bald eagles if you’re diligent.
Woodall’s Campground Directory is the largest and most detailed North American Campground Directory available, with nearly 15,000 campgrounds included. Woodall’s rates and inspects privately owned campgrounds with its trusted 5W-5W rating system. Find out more about Texas Campgrounds.
Woodall’s… We’re everywhere RVers go.

When Choosing A Campground

When Choosing A Campground
By Marcella S Meeks

Choosing a campground can be frustrating for some of us because we all want different things and have different expectations although we all have one thing in common: camping. Some of us have pop-up campers, travel trailers (RV’s), and motor homes while others camp the traditional way (tents). But we all have different ideas when it comes to choosing the right campground to fit our needs.

I talked with several people who love to camp and asked them what were the top 3 things that were most important to them when choosing a campground, and this is the response from nine different campers.

1. Dog friendly, Price, Full hook-ups

2. Cheap, clean and not to close to neighbors

3. No kid area, pull through, fire pit

4. Large area between RV’s, read reviews…, level sites, WiFi

5. Kids playground, beach front, spacious campsites

6. Friendly and happy campers! Pool in the summer, a good kayak or boat launch within the park

7. Nice views, shady, quiet zone

8. Picnic tables, grill, bait store/marina near by

9. Pine-cone free, pebbled tent pads, garbage bins near by, bathrooms/showers near sites

These are important things to consider when you make your selection. Make a list of what is important to you and don’t be shy to ask before you book so you’ll know exactly what you are getting. Request a website and read reviews, if available.

A satisfied camper is a happy camper!

Experience the beauty of Arkansas’s fall foliage

Experience the beauty of Arkansas’s fall foliage

Arkansas Family Travel Host

DSC_7622ps7Experience the beauty of Arkansas’s fall foliage
Fall is one of the most popular times of the year to visit Arkansas because of its excellent fall foliage. Every autumn, nature paints the mountains and valleys of The Natural State with gorgeous hues of gold, red and orange. Many of Arkansas’s visitors travel here for special fall vacations to catch a glimpse (and take some incredible photos) of the season. Scenic drives showcase autumn’s finest while allowing you to explore the state’s varied topography on a fun-filled road trip.

Fall colors begin to appear in the Ozarks and other northern sections of the state by the second week in October and continue slowly southward. Mid to late October generally provides peak fall color in the northern portions of Arkansas. October and November are two of the most popular months for visitors due to the beautiful fall colors and favorable weather.

Ramblin' Camper Travel Times

My Love For Travel…
https://ramblincampertraveltimes.com/
By Marcella Simmons

Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies in addition to writing and spending time with my family. Now that all my children are grown (I think they are! lol), I spend as much time with their children as I did with them or at least I try to.

Several times a year, we take a trip somewhere. My love and passion for traveling didn’t just start when I got grown. Somewhere in the growing up process, my yearning for traveling just grew with me and one day, budded into a fulltime hobby.

Because of my love for travel I purchased a popup camper to pull behind so that we can travel in style. To get a feel for it would be like, I spent the weekend in it in the backyard. My three grandsons spent the night with me and we experienced…
